Overview
There are several phones (Huawei, Volla, etc.), tablets, and third-party devices (such as Kodi Box) that run the Android Operating System under-the-hood. There are other devices that run open-source versions of Android (like GrapheneOS).
Many of these devices support the installation of Android apps. However, they do not include access to Google Play Services or the Google Play Store.
Manual App Setup (Android)
If your device lacks access to the Google Play Store, don't worry. It is likely that you can still use VirtualShield VPN, but you will need to install it manually. This article will help you get started.
Before you begin, make sure your device is fully up-to-date. If you are not running Android version 7.0 or later, some of the relevant options may not appear.
How to manually install VirtualShield on your Android phone/tablet:
Start by visiting this link to download the Android Package (APK) file to your device:
Google Android 7.0 or later is required. See our support article for more information.
Find the VirtualShield.apk file you just downloaded to start the installation. This file should be located in your Downloads folder.
To find your Downloads folder, open the File Manager app on your device, and look for the Downloads section.
If you are prompted to allow installation of apps from Unknown sources, you will need to make sure that third-party apps are allowed on your device.
- Open your Settings app, then navigate to Security & fingerprint. It might be labeled Security and privacy.
- Turn on the Unknown sources option to allow your device to install apps outside of the Google Play Store.
If you can't find this option, navigate to Apps & notifications > Special app access > Unknown sources.
Tap the Install button to start the installation. Once the installation is complete, this button will say Open. Tap it to launch the application.
If you are prompted to unlock your device, enter your fingerprint/passcode.
That's it! You can now open VirtualShield VPN using the shield icon on your Home screen or App Drawer, to log in to connect to our secure network.
