Keep the VPN alive on Sleep

Overview

This option allows you to remain connected to the VPN when your device goes to sleep. This adds another additional layer of security, by preventing any private information from leaking out across your public network without your knowledge or permission.

This setting is disabled by default, you must enable it yourself. It can be useful if your device is running behind a firewall or NAT (Network Address Translation), or if you would like to stay connected to our network at all times.

Windows

Typically when your device enters Sleep/Hibernation mode you will lose internet access, subsequently breaking the VPN connection and exposing your location when it wakes up again.

If you don’t enable the Keep Alive on Sleep or the Connect Automatically option, you will need to re-connect to the VPN manually in order to remain protected.

Just be aware this can impact battery life. If your device is low on battery, we recommend disabling this option to help reduce power consumption.

Keep Alive on Sleep

How to keep the connection alive on your Windows computer:
1

Open the Settings app on your Windows computer.

To open Settings, click the Start button, type “settings” in the search box and press Enter.

2

Navigate to System Power & sleep from the sidebar.

3

Below Network connection, find the option labeled “When my PC is asleep and on battery power, disconnect from the network”, and choose Never.

This option is only available on laptops and tablets with a built-in battery. See this Microsoft article for more information.

Common Questions

Will the VPN disconnect if I’m using cellular data?
No, this article only applies to wired and Wi-Fi connections, it does not apply to Cellular/LTE networks. In most situations the Connect Automatically option is all you need in order to remain connected.
Will the VPN connect when I turn on my device?
If the Autostart option is enabled, the app will open automatically when you power on or restart your device. If used alongside the Connect Automatically option, you will remain connected to the VPN at all times.
Why can’t I see this option on my device?
If your computer is plugged in and not running on battery, you can simply disable Sleep/Hibernation mode. See this Microsoft article for more information.
